Are Scentsy Fragrances Toxic?

This is a super interesting topic for me.  The word ‘Toxic” means “Containing a Harmful Substance” but really, that’s pretty vague isn’t it?  What does Harmful Mean to YOU?  Perhaps you only use Vegan products and non-vegan products are considered ‘toxic’ by you.  Maybe you want to use our Wax in a Potpourri or even with a Tea Light (flamed candle) to release our scent and want to know if it’s okay to do that.   VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds and we are asked about these as well.

I’m going to break down the most common “Toxic” Questions we receive to help you determine if each of our products are ‘safe’ for you to use.  We answer ALL your questions about Breathing in, Ingesting, using our products Topically and MORE for both Humans and Animals.  If you don’t see your question completely answered please feel free to post your question and we will find the answer for you.

Q. Are Scentsy Fragrances Toxic if you ingest them?
Well, if you put them in your mouth then yea, you might experience an adverse affect but… it depends on which product you ingest and of course how much.  NONE of our products are meant to be ingested – PERIOD.  I know of people and pets who’ve eaten our wax bars as well as the Scent Pak beads.  The stories are each unique and no one has had any adverse affect other than maybe having smelly bits…if you know what I mean…when it passes through them.   If you ingest our Room Spray…seek medical attention.  Our Essential and 100% Natural Oils for our Ultrasonic Diffusers are ONLY meant to be used in our Diffusers for Aromatherapy purposes and that is all.  They are not meant to be used for ANY other purpose so make sure to not ingest them, keep them away from Children and Pets and anyone else who might think they are.  If you are drinking our Clean or Laundry products then I think you may have more problems than their toxicity.  Please, don’t ingest any of our products, or any product from any company for that matter, that are not labeled as something you are meant to eat.

Q. Are Scentsy Candle and Oil Scents Toxic to Pets such as Birds, Cats and Dogs?
According to bird veterinarians, breeders, and resellers, any scented product can cause illness or fatalities in birds. Dr. Marla Lichtenberger, DVM, stated in an article posted on www.thebirdclinic.com “…airborne agents can create a critical respiratory event; aerosols, burning candles, incense, cleaning agents, or smoke (tobacco or any other source).”  As for how Essential and Natural Oils and other scent products affect Cats and Dogs, there are differing claims and reports.  I found some great articles online from Veterinarians as well as Essential and Natural Oil Experts.  I would do your research in advance on how these types of products might affect your Cat, Dog, Bird, Snake, Ferret, Fish…whatever pet you may be concerned about.  I’ve only found that Cat’s may have sensitivities to these oils but not Candle Wax scents.

Scentsy Scent FAQ’s

What kind of fragrance oils are used in Scentsy Bars?
Scentsy uses both synthetic and naturally-derived fragrances oils to achieve the highest quality and longest-lasting bar. Synthetic oils are used for several reasons, including: · When using natural oils results in unrestrained use of limited or endangered natural resources. · When it isn’t possible to derive the natural oils from nature. For example, synthetic oil is necessary to reproduce lily of the valley because fragrance cannot be extracted from this flower through typical extraction methods. · When it is cost prohibitive to acquire natural oils and would preclude Scentsy from offering particular fragrances without increasing the price for customers.

What kind of wax is used to make Scentsy Bars?
We use a custom, high-quality paraffin wax blend designed to give you long-lasting fragrance and selected for its scent loading ability, melting point and firmness.

Why doesn’t Scentsy use a soy- or vegetable-based wax?
Soy- or vegetable-based waxes can produce a quality wicked candle, but not a quality wickless candle.

Are Scentsy Bars safe?
Scentsy Bars are safer than wicked candles because no flame is required for the wax to melt and release fragrance. Since the wax is warmed and not burned as with traditional candles, no harmful chemicals or pollutants are released into the air. With Scentsy, there is no flame, smoke, soot or lead.

Do Scentsy Bars contain harmful phthalates?
Scentsy Bars do not contain or release harmful phthalates. A small percentage of Scentsy Bar fragrances contain extremely low levels of non-harmful diethyl phthalate (DEP), commonly used in fragrances to help blend ingredients and to make fragrances last longer. DEP is thoroughly tested and is consistently regarded as safe for use in fragrance by several government bodies including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the European Union Scientific Committee on Consumer Products (SCCP). Scentsy follows all safety standards regulating the use of DEP set by the International Fragrance Association (IFRA).

No. The FDA does not approve or recommend ingesting or topically applying any essential oil. Aromatherapy is a broad term for a range of therapies involving essential oils, including baths, massage and other treatments whereby the oils are absorbed through the skin or inhaled. Aromatherapy is loosely defined, and there is no consistent or standard definition.

Can Scentsy Oils be used for aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy generally refers to the use of aromas for therapeutic (pharmacological) purposes. Scentsy Oils are not designed to be ingested or applied topically, so they are not intended for this purpose. However, there is scientific evidence that specific scents stimulate the olfactory system – the parts of the brain connected to smell – and can induce a chemical reaction in the brain which make a person feel relaxed, calm or even stimulated. This is known as aromachology, which is the psychological or mental effect of smelling essential oils. Scentsy Oils can absolutely be used for aromachology.

Are Scentsy Oils therapy-grade?
“Therapy-grade” is a misleading term; there is no official entity, governmental or otherwise, that screens, evaluates or grades essential oils. In the spirit of Authenticity, we do not make any claims about our products that cannot be substantiated or verified.

Can I use the oils in my warmers?
Adding Scentsy Oils to a Scentsy Warmer does not create a pleasant fragrance experience and may severely discolor the warming dish. Our systems are designed for an optimal fragrance experience. Scentsy Oils are best experienced via cold-mist diffusion, and Scentsy Bars are best experienced via our warmers. Though we recommend using Scentsy Oils and Scentsy Bars with their intended systems only, warming Scentsy Oils in your warmer will not void the warranty.

Our chihuahua/corgi mixed-breed’s favorite Martha Stewart stuffed Raccoon got Scentsy wax on its paw when I accidentally hit a warmer in a game of keep-away. Is it safe to give our pet this toy if I cannot get all the wax off (it’s tough to get off of fur)?

Kathy, no essential oils are safe for dogs IMO. We are a fragrance company so we make our oils to be used in our Diffusers. Not for use on skin or for health or other products. That said, customers use our products in other warmers and diffusers and I am aware of people using them for making bath bombs, in laundry, on skin and for other healing uses but, this is at their discretion and not the uses listed as our intended use

Would love more info on the food grade paraffin wax and why sets it aside from normal paraffin wax please.

As lots of people say all paraffin wax is toxic and shouldn’t be used at all.

    • Admin

Hi Melanie, The reason we use Paraffin wax is because of the scent load ability and that at the temperature our warmers are set to warm the wax, it is safe and highly effective at giving a long lasting and great scent experience in a safe way. It’s safe because we aren’t burning the wax. That’s when the structure changes

Our Oils are made specifically to be used in our Diffusers so we cannot recommend using them in any other fashion. As a customer, you are always able to use our products in any manner you choose but again, we only can recommend using them as we’ve indicated in our diffusers
